SUMMARY:WWW 2012 Workshop (PhiloWeb 2012)
DESCRIPTION:Keynote Speakers: \n\nStevan Harnad (University of Southam
pton)\nScott Lash (Goldsmiths) \nChristopher Menzel (Texas A&amp\;M Un
 iversity)\nFran&ccedil\;ois Rastier (INALCO)\n\nCall for Papers: \nThe
advent of the Web is one of the defining technological events of the
twentieth-first century\, yet its impact on the fundamental questions
of philosophy has not yet been widely explored\, much less systematize
 d. The Web\, as today implemented on the foundations of the Internet\,
is broadly construed as an information space\, the space of all items
of interest (&ldquo\;resources&rdquo\;) identified by URIs (Uniform R
 esource Identifiers\, such as &ldquo\;http://www.example.org&rdquo\;).
Originally conceived as an hypertext system of linked documents\, tod
ay the Web is rapidly evolving as a universal platform for data and co
mputation\, as URIs are used to identify everything from data on the S
emantic Web and mobile code in Web applications. Even more swiftly is
the Web-driven transformation of many previously unquestioned philosop
 hical concepts of privacy\, authority\, meaning\, identity\, belief\,
intelligence\, cognition\, and even embodiment in surprising ways. In
response\, we hope to provoke the properly philosophical question of w
hether there is a consistent new branch or practice of philosophy that
can weave these changes to technology and society into a coherent who
le and have a real social impact?\nWe welcome all submissions of a phi
losophical nature involving the Web.\nFor further information http://w

SUMMARY:Web Science Doctoral Summer School 2011
DESCRIPTION:The Digital Enterprise Research Institute\, NUI Galway is
pleased to announce that the Second Web Science Trust Doctoral Summer
School will be held in DERI from July 6th until July 13th\, 2011\nThe
Web is the largest technological artefact in existence\, comprising a
global network of information sites and services. It is a social machi
ne\, delivering information between people and communities\, embedded
in almost all processes of human society: education\, medicine\, scien
ce and technology\, commerce\, entertainment and social activity. It i
s often simply supposed that the Web is a neutral technology\, a stabl
e computing platform for the delivery of information and services. Wha
t is overlooked is that the Web is changing constantly in response to
the demands of human society. Incremental innovations leads to changes
in how people use the Web and in turn how Web technology responds to
changed human interaction. Small technological decisions influence how
individuals use the Web and ripple out to have unanticipated macro-ef
fects. Sometimes these effects are beneficial such as the emergence of
Web 2.0 technologies. Other technologies such as the rise of spam bot
s or 'blackhat' search engine optimisation techniques clutter the Web
with irrelevant\, distracting information. While influential corporati
ons such as Google\, Facebook and Microsoft generate huge revenues fro
m the Web\, the Web itself is owned by everyone and no-one. We need to
fully understand the demands placed on the Web by human society\, so
that its fate does not lead to a 'tragedy of the commons' but to a sus
tainable technological resource for the future.\n

DESCRIPTION:Nothing like the Web has ever happened in all of human his
tory. The Web is the largest human information construct in history. T
he scale of its impact and the rate of its adoption are unparalleled.
If we are to ensure that the Web benefits the human race we must do ou
r best to understand it\, engineer its future and ensure its social be
nefit. Web Science is the new interdisciplinary field targeting these
objectives.\n&nbsp\;\nThe *Web Science Summer Academy* offers a unique
combination of 8 courses in Web Science. The courses cover socio-econ

SUMMARY:ACM Web Science Conference 2011
DESCRIPTION:Web Science is concerned with the full scope of socio-tech
nical relationships that are engaged in the World Wide Web. It is base
d on the notion that understanding the Web involves not only an analys
is of its architecture and applications\, but also insight into the pe
ople\, organizations\, policies\, and economics that are affected by a
nd subsumed within it.\nAs such Web Science\, and thus this conference
\, is inherently interdisciplinary and integrates computer and informa
tion sciences with a multitude of disciplines including sociology\, ec
 onomics\, political science\, law\, management\, language and communic
ation\, geography and psychology. This conference is unique in the man
ner in which it brings these disciplines together in creative and crit

SUMMARY:Making Sense of Microposts (#MSM2011)
DESCRIPTION:Workshop at the Extended Semantic Web Conference 2011\nWit
h the appearance and expansion of Twitter\, Facebook Like\, Foursquare
\, and similar low-effort publishing services\, the effort required to
participate on the Web is getting lower and lower. Enormous quantitie
s of small user input are being piped into the data streams of the Web
\, leading to a rate of growth which has never been witnessed before.
We refer to such small user inputs as Microposts\, these can range fro
 m 'checkin' at a location on a geo-social networking site - allowing u
sers to inform their friends of their current location - through to a
status update on a social networking platform. The production of such
masses of data\, combined with the disparate and heterogeneous nature
of the topics which Microposts refer to\, requires new techniques to g
lean knowledge from them and provide useful services and applications
sitting atop the amalgamation of this data.\nThis workshop: "Making Se
nse of Microposts" (MSM)\, will cover the topics of: information extra
ction and leveraging of semantics from Microposts\; making use of Micr
oposts' semantics\; and social studies related to Microposts that coul
d help build appealing new systems based on this type of data. The wor
kshop has two main points of difference from existing Social Semantic
Web workshops which partially treat Microposts: (a) the interdisciplin
ary nature and interest to bring together the Social Sciences and Sema
ntic Web research\; (b) the focus on Microposts' usage in making appea
ling tools for Web users and showing how the Semantic Web makes a diff
erence in those applications. One of the main goals of MSM is to bring
together the researchers from various disciplines treating the questi
on of Microposts from different angles. We are particularly interested
in submissions describing theories from the Social Sciences related t
o the creation and potential usage of Microposts that could inspire th
e creation of data structures\, ontologies and finally interfaces that
make advanced use of Microposts. We also envisage submissions that de
scribe the application of Semantic Web technologies\, either in enabli
ng the inference of new facts\, or the gleaning and enriching of knowl
edge from collections of such data.

nternet and World Wide Web have been the agents of this revolution. Th
is deluge of information and data has led to a range of scientific dis
coveries and engineering innovations. From characterising the shape an

of content.\nWe are also witnessing the emergence of a new Web - a Web
of Linked Data - driven by the release of large sets of data into the
public domain. This offers new opportunities for science\, government
and business.\nThere are challenges too &ndash\; how will we ensure t

DESCRIPTION:\nVideo Archive\nTo see the archived video of the event\,
see http://archive.zepler.tv/275/\n\nPerhaps the key issue in the onli
ne era of the Connected World in which we live is that of identity. Pu
blic concern over identity theft and privacy is already high\, and can
only grow as we become more engaged online. What happens as we move f
orward and make medical records fully electronic for example? How shou
ld governments plan to provide public services securely? Even if we cu
t out the regular loss of electronic records from laptops or CDs left
on trains or lost in transit\, how will governments keep our records s
afe? Should we link tax\, driving\, medical\, benefits\, and other per
sonal records to be accessible in one place for ease of citizen use\,
or does that introduce an unacceptable systemic weakness? And how do w
e know that information about us kept by commercial organisations is s
afe and not available to be abused? Today we have the Data Protection
Act to protect us\, but is it adequate? What should the rules be about
availability and use of private records? What should be covered by pr
ivacy laws and what is fair game to be sold on and used for (say) mark
eting? What is privacy anyway\, and are we entitled to it? If we put i
nformation about ourselves online (for example on Facebook\, or even o
n an email)\, can we reasonably expect it to stay private? And can IT
security keep pace with both technological change and the best efforts
  of increasingly sophisticated online criminals?\n&nbsp\;\nPanelists:\

SUMMARY:3rd ACM Conference on Recommender Systems
DESCRIPTION:Recommender systems are software applications that aim to
support users in their decision-making while interacting with large in
formation spaces. They recommend items of interest to users based on p
references they have expressed\, either explicitly or implicitly. The
ever-expanding volume and increasing complexity of information on the
Web has therefore made such systems essential tools for users in a var
iety of information seeking or e-commerce activities. Recommender syst
ems help overcome the information overload problem by exposing users t
o the most interesting items\, and by offering novelty\, surprise\, an
d relevance. Recommender technology is hence the central piece of the
information seeking puzzle. Major e-commerce sites such as Amazon and
Yahoo are using recommendation technology in ubiquitous ways. Many new
comers are on their way and entrepreneurs are competing in order to f
ind the right approach to use this technology effectively.

SUMMARY:Tenth International Conference on Web Information Systems Engi
 neering
DESCRIPTION:In recent years we observe growing availability of structu
red information on the Web. While significant part of it is in a human
readable form\, not adapted for automated processing (HTML\, AJAX\, F
 lash\, Deep Web\, Web applications)\, more machine-processable informa
tion enters the Web thanks to complementary top-down and bottom-up ten
dencies. Bottom-up tendencies are related to publication of structured
  information in a machine-processable form (e.g. in XML\, RDF\, JSON).
It also covers annotation of unstructured content with meta-data (e.g
 . microformats\, RDFa\, SIOC\, MPEG-7). Top-down approaches are relate
d to algorithmically structuring unstructured information. They combin
e different methods of Web mining\, information extraction\, classific
ation\, categorisation\, automated linking and named entities recognit
ion. Moreover\, phenomena combining these tendencies\, such as social
annotation of resources\, are widely present in today&rsquo\;s Web. Mo
re structured information on the Web enables information integration u
sing shared vocabularies (linked data approach)\, data mashups (domain
-specific integration)\, and automated algorithmic information integra
tion (schemas matching\, dataspaces\, lexical techniques). In parallel
\, popularization of mashup\, data monitoring and social data sharing
techniques\, enable easier information reuse and growing number of int
elligent services combing various dynamic information sources\, algori
thms and explicit or implicit users input. The ESIW 2009 workshop will
adopt a multidisciplinary approach to current tendencies in exploitin
g structured information on the Web. The workshop will provide an info
rmal and vibrant forum for researchers and industry practitioners to s
hare their research results and practical development experiences.

SUMMARY:Reasoning Web 2009
DESCRIPTION:The advanced capabilities required in most Semantic Web ap
plication scenarios primarily call for reasoning. Reasoning capabiliti
es are offered by Semantic Web languages that are currently being deve
loped. Most of these languages\, however\, are developed mainly from f
unctionality-centered perspectives (e.g. ontology reasoning or access
validation) or application-centered perspectives (e.g. Web service ret
rieval and composition). A perspective centered on the reasoning techn
iques complementing the above-mentioned activities appears desirable f
or Semantic Web systems and applications. This Summer School series is

SUMMARY:WebSci09 - Society On-Line
DESCRIPTION:The Web Science Research Initiative have announced WebSci0
9\, the first 'Web Science' conference to be organised by the WSRI. We
b Science focuses on understanding\, designing and developing the tech
nologies and applications that make up the World Wide Web. But the Web
does not exist without the participation of people and organisations.
Now that a significant proportion of life is spent on-line in many co
untries\, it makes sense for this conference to be dedicated to the pr
esentation of research into society on the Web.\n&nbsp\;\nThe proceedi
ngs of WebSci09 are freely available online in the Web Science&nbsp\;R
epository. To aid in navigation the following views have been made ava
