Manuel Castells is as well the holder of the Wallis Annenberg Chair in Communication Technology and Society at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, and the Marvin and Joanne Grossman Distinguished Visiting Professor of Technology and Society at the Massachussets Institute of Technology. Prior to his appointment to Berkeley in 1979, he was professor of sociology at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes es Sciences Sociales in Paris, and professor of sociology at the Universidad Autonoma de Madrid. He is a member of the Spanish Royal Academy of Economic Sciences. He has received honorary doctorates from 14 universities.He has published 23 books and over 100 academic articles, including the trilogy "The Information Age: Economy, Society, and Culture" (Blackwell, 1996-2003) translated in 21 languages. His research focuses on the social and economic dimensions of information and communication technologies. He has also worked on urban and regional development, and on the relationship between globalization and cultural identity.
